Families Unite to Organize 4th Providence Dystonia Zoo Walk for a Cure
The 4th Providence Dystonia Zoo Walk on September 8 to benefit the Dystonia Medical Research Foundation (DMRF) was a joint effort of several area families. Many thanks to the organizing committee: Sue Baron, Tricia Bono, Beth Paolero, and Paula Schneider for another wonderfully successful event to raise awareness and research funds toward a cure.
Guest speakers included former DMRF Clinical Fellow Dr. Umer Akbar from Rhode Island Hospital and Mandi Sleeper who spoke about her experience with dystonia and deep brain stimulation surgery.
Allergan, Ipsen, Merz, and US World Meds were among the event sponsors. Kohl's Cares provided volunteers from Smithfield and Seekonk stores.
Dystonia Zoo Walks offer a “twist” on traditional charity walks with no required walking course or expectation other than enjoying a morning at the zoo connecting with others in the dystonia community and promoting awareness. Dystonia Zoo Walks to benefit the DMRF are scheduled across the country. More information about these and additional DMRF events is available at www.dystonia-foundation.org/events.
The Dystonia Medical Research Foundation (DMRF) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to advancing research for improved dystonia treatments and ultimately a cure, promoting awareness, and supporting the well-being of affected individuals and families. The DMRF can be reached at 800-377-3978 or www.dystonia-foundation.org.
