Local Leader Organizes First Cedar Rapids Dogs4Dystonia Dog Walk
The first Cedar Rapids Dogs4Dystonia Dog Walk took place Saturday, October 15 in Marion, Iowa, organized by DMRF Support Leader Sheila Williams. Attendees and their four-footed friends gathered at Thomas Park to raise dystonia awareness and raise funds for medical research. Sponsors include Partners in Medicine/Dr. Cindy L. Hanawalt, Meier Veterinary Clinic, Puerto Villarta Bar & Grill, and dozens of local businesses that donated items for a raffle and silent auction. Americorps provided volunteers.
Sheila was diagnosed with dystonia six years ago. Symptoms affect her leg, foot, neck, speech, and swallowing. She shared her story in advance of the Dog Walk with the Marion Times and The Gazette, bringing greater visibility to dystonia in the region.
Sheila organized past DMRF events in Texas, where she previously resided, cumulatively raising $10,000 in support of the Foundation.
The East Central Iowa Corridor Dystonia Support Group meets quarterly at St. Luke's Hospital in Cedar Rapids.
Congratulations to Sheila and her supporters for a successful inaugural event!
