What Makes CDI Different?

What Makes the CDI Different from the
DMRF's Traditional Approach to Research?

Accelerating translational research “from bench to bedside” requires new paradigms, new partners, and new practices as well as merging cutting-edge technologies with sound business planning.

First, The Focus. Where the DMRF has traditionally funded basic research that has sought to understand the mechanisms underlying this disorder, the CDI is focused on the development of treatments. Emphasis is being placed on translational medicine: formulating or identifying therapeutic strategies that produce measurable health benefits.

Second, New Paradigms. Whereas the basic research funded by the DMRF has been largely investigator-driven, the CDI employs a contract-driven approach with carefully negotiated timelines, specified outcomes, and clear accountabilities as the primary mechanism for managing research investments. A research roadmap that has been developed in concert with the National Institute of Neurological Disorders & Stroke (NINDS) and the Medical and Scientific Advisory Council of the DMRF will ensure that investments are strategically placed in areas that have the greatest promise. Merging the business disciplines that direct drug development in the biopharmaceutical world with leading-edge science is the challenge that the CDIAC will undertake. Critical to the success of this venture are multidisciplinary, multi-institutional efforts supported with the necessary infrastructure to facilitate collaboration.

Third, New Partners. As we move from drug discovery to pre-clinical development to clinical trials, new partners from the biopharmaceutical industry will be enlisted to provide the necessary tools and expertise. The process of forming alliances is underway.
