Federal Research Agency Calls for Dystonia Research
National Institutes of Health Issues Dystonia Program Announcement
The National Institute of Neurological Disorders & Stroke (NINDS) and several other National Institutes of Health agencies, in conjunction
with the DMRF and the Bachmann-Strauss Dystonia & Parkinson Foundation, issued
a new program announcement titled: Understanding and Treating Generalized and
Focal Dystonias.
The launch of this program announcement demonstrates that the medical research engine of the US Federal government--the National Institutes of Health--is specifically seeking to fund scientific investigations on dystonia. The result will be millions of dollars of additional dystonia research.
This important development is a result of discussion and conclusions
from the "2nd NINDS-DMRF Workshop on Dystonia: Recent Advances and Future
Directions” held in June 2006. The goal is to encourage
basic, translational, and clinical studies to better understand the causes of
dystonia and the effects on the nervous system, to stimulate the development of tools and resources to
further dystonia research, to accelerate research into promising therapeutic
approaches, and to stimulate progress in dystonia research through
encouraging and facilitating collaborations among experts in varied fields.
