What would you do to find a cure for someone you loved? Climb a volcano? Face an avalanche? Elaine McEnery is prepared to do all of this for her husband Richard who has lived with dystonia since he was a teenager. Beginning June 16, Elaine is climbing Mount Rainier, an active volcano encased in over 35 square miles of snow and glacial ice. At 14,410 feet, it is the tallest mountain in Washington State. The climb and return are expected to take a total of two days.
Inspired by Richard’s deep brain stimulation (DBS) surgery in November of 2006, Elaine explained, “I woke up one morning and thought, if my husband is brave enough to have brain surgery then I’m brave enough to climb Mount Rainier to raise money for the DMRF to find a cure for him—and for others with dystonia.”
Elaine is collecting sponsorships to fundraise for research. For years Richard struggled with treatments that failed to adequately control his symptoms, and DBS is the most promising therapeutic to emerge from research in the last 10 years. “It’s only been three months since his surgery, but we both remain very optimistic about the eventual benefits.”
