Dystonia Study Group

Led by Cynthia Comella, MD of the Movement Disorders Team at Rush University Medical Center, the Dystonia Study Group (DSG) was formed in 1996 to organize and conduct clinical trials to test treatments for dystonia. To date, the studies conducted by the DSG have addressed rating scales used by physicians to measure the severity of dystonias, botulinum toxin (including a head-to-head study comparing botulinum toxin types A and B), epidemiology, the drug Sinemet (carbidopa-levodopa), and deep brain stimulation.

The DSG was one of DMRF's first attempts to deliberately cultivate clinical studies to address areas in which more conclusive information was needed. The studies organized by the DSG have been integral to achieving conclusive information on the effectiveness of dystonia treatments and diagnostic tools.
