Brian Stephenson
In a bid to raise
money for the Dystonia Medical Research Foundation (DMRF), Brian Stephenson ran
two marathons in October. The first was the Towpath Marathon in Ohio October 7
in intense heat, and the second was the Grand Rapids Marathon October 28. Brian
is “overjoyed” to report that he has raised over $2000 for the DMRF!

Brian Stephenson was runner 367 at the Towpath Marathon in Ohio.
Brian Stephenson’s treatment history reads like
an epic journey through the field of neurological medicine: years of botulinum
toxin injections in the 1990s, two denervation surgeries, pallidotomy, and deep
brain stimulation (DBS) in 2004. Since the DBS, he has endured stubborn
infections, partial removal of the hardware, and ongoing complications. Despite
this medical marathon in search of relief for his segmental dystonia, he
continues to push himself to compete alongside other athletes in endurance
running races throughout the Midwest. Over the course of just a few years, he has raised thousands of dollars on
behalf of DMRF running marathons.
What makes Brian’s
accomplishments all the more remarkable is that he has completed several races
within mere weeks or days of being treated for serious DBS- and
dystonia-related complications, many of which prevented him from training as
thoroughly as he intended. Brian credits the love and support of his family for
his perseverance and calls his wife Robyn ‘an angel.’
