Becky's Blog: So Far, So Good
10/24/07
Hi! Let me introduce myself: I’m Becky Kuk and I have generalized dystonia. I got married five years ago to my husband John and now we are pregnant. Actually, a little over six months ago we went through pre-implantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) and in vitro fertilization (IVF) so that we could have a dystonia-free baby. It was months of tests, doctors, giving myself shots, and a couple of procedures but it was all well worth it. Because in a little less than 3 months we have 98% chance of having a dystonia-free baby!
So far it’s been a great pregnancy. I haven’t felt sick at all. I was a little tired the first trimester, but really it’s been great! The only problems I have had involve going off my Artane®, the medication that makes it possible for me to walk normally. Four months before having the PGD/IVF I started reducing my medication. At first it wasn’t bad and I could still walk and run (I’m an avid runner), but by the two-month reduction mark I was having some trouble and had to stop running because I would stumble. Then a month later I couldn’t go on my daily walks anymore. Now walking is quite a bit more difficult so it’s just a bit of a challenge to do the weekly grocery shopping, but I am dealing with it. And like I said, it’s all worth it to know that my baby won’t have the problems that I have! And my husband John has been so great! Holding his arm when we walk helps, and he helps around the house a lot. I just don’t know how I could have done this all without him.
I will be keeping you up to date on how Ellie and I are doing through this blog, so I will write again!
Until later, Becky & Ellie
